Wilbur Turner Maker Jr
December 28, 1953, High Point, North Carolina -
June 23, 2024, Kirkland, Washington
Our most beloved Wilbur Turner Amaker Jr, called home to be with his precious family and the God he loved.
We who knew, adored, and loved Wilbur, continue to celebrate the wonderful, fun-loving, talented man. Wilbur was born in High Point, North Carolina. He told stories of his wonderful childhood in that community. He excelled in high school academically, athletically, and musically playing the Cornet while in school. One of his many dreams was to play pro baseball. At age 16 Wilbur graduated from high school and began college.
Wilbur grew up during the civil rights movement and High Point, North Carolina was a central location for many of them and Wilbur, a young boy was a keen observer. His recollections were so interesting of the Civil Rights movement, and how it molded his character were so interesting. He always wanted to be a criminal lawyer and in his early years was nearing that goal. He had an active belief in the value of human life, justice and practicing benevolent treatment or provide assistance to others was always at the forefront with Wilbur. Wilbur's outstanding trademark was his extraordinary wood craftsmanship. While living in Seattle Wilbur’s love of woodworking became a main focus for him. His favorite of pastimes – creating and crafting beautiful, exquisite, one-of-a-kind jewelry boxes and walking sticks for men and women. Selecting the most special or rarest of woods. Many have received his completed pieces made totally by hand and everything that is Wilbur!
Passions of Wilbur were music Motown, Blues, Soul, and Gospel. Wilbur also enjoyed a challenging game of chess favorite, watching football and basketball teams (he was still loyal to North Carolina teams) and his favorite black and white old crime programs, movies and TV shows. And then there was food. His favorites were many a good burger (no cheese) from his days working in the family diner, good New York steak, cornbread, grits with lots of butter, ham hocks, greens, mac’n cheese with tuna and sweet potato pie! And we can’t forget to mention his frequent sherbert ice cream ginger ale float.
We thank Virginia Mason and his Dr. David Aboulafia, and his longtime friend and sponsor Jacob Russell.
Wilbur was predeceased by his brother Darrell, father Wilbur Amaker SR. a High Point policeman who rose to the rank of major in his 30-year career, His mother Marie (Mc Rae) Amaker, who was owner along with her husband of the AMS, a popular diner. Wilbur enjoyed working there for many years alongside his mother. Wilbur is survived by extended family in the High Point, North Carolina area.
Wilbur had too many friends to mention but we’d like to say Wilbur,” You are forever loved. You are forever missed. We are so glad you came into our lives!”
